Disabling the Pesky System Beep in Windows 7

One of the more annoying things about Windows 7 is that pesky system beep. If you've ever pressed a wrong key or tried to use volume control, you'll probably have noticed the beep. It also shows up whenever an error dialogue box appears.

Luckily, you can disable the beep that comes with the errors and live a beep-free life when using Windows 7.

Working from Computer Management

One of the ways you can disable the beep is from computer management.

1. Start by right-clicking the Computer icon on your desktop or in the Start Menu

2. Select Manage from the drop-down list

3. Head to System Tools and Device Manager

4. In the View menu, select the Show Hidden Devices option

5. Expand the list under Non Plug and Play Devices

6. Select Beep

7. Right-click on Beep and click on Properties

8. Head to the Driver tab in the Properties window

9. In the Startup section scroll down the Type drop-down list and select Disabled

10. Click OK

11. Restart your computer

Working from the Control Panel

You can also remove the beep from the control panel.

1. Go to your Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound

2. Under the Sound menu, select Change System Sounds

3. From the Sound window, select the Sound tab

4. In the Program Events list, select Default Beep

5. Under Sounds, select None

6. Click OK

Note that if you alter your sound scheme, the once-disabled beep may well be enabled again. Work through the steps again using either method to disable the annoying beep to change things back to the peaceful norm you're used to.

Congratulations on achieving a beep-less Windows 7!
