If you are a Windows Phone user, eagerly waiting for Blackberry Messenger to make a debut on Windows Phone store, then you will be disappointed to know that BBM is not expected anytime soon. The decision to ignore BBM app for Windows Phone that is currently the world’s third mobile OS is indeed a sad one because in recent months Windows OS has grown tremendously going from strength to strength.
Confirming this decision Blackberry cited the reason as lack of consumer demand for BBM on Windows OS. However, this argument may well fail to convince many, especially to those who witnessed BBM’s spectacular debut when it was launched on iOS and android mounting to 10 million downloads in the first day of launch itself.
It [the continuing lack of a BBM Windows Phone app] is entirely market driven. Our initial launch on iOS and Android was a function of the prevalence of those platforms. It is not a statement of intent, and it’s not a strategic or religious thing, it’s just a function of when does it make sense and when is it something that consumers demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while and worth their while.
While Blackberry may, yet not see enough market for it BBM on Windows Phone, there are enough indications of the increasing market share of Windows Phone users. The platform has highly benefitted from applications such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Vine apps, all available at the Windows Phone App Store. Also with Microsoft taking over the Nokia brand there are strong reasons to believe that Windows OS is only going to gain from here on.
